We understand that we are not a perfect fit for everyone's writing style or personality. We will not take
it personally if you choose not to attend our meetings, and we ask the same of you if it is suggested that
Your opinion of your own writing might vary greatly from the group's. You are welcome to seek out the
moderator's input outside of group time if you feel you would like to present your case privately.
Your submissions must follow standard formatting guidelines.
If the overall quality of your work falls off, we may disallow any further work being submitted to the
group at large.
General Guidelines
We request regular attendance from all participants. We will make allowances for conflicting work
schedules, medical issues, and other uncontrollable circumstances. However, if a member misses more
than three consecutive meetings (barring holidays or scheduling conflicts as mentioned above), they
will be placed on "inactive" status, as there is a waiting list for space in the group and space in the group
is at a premium. In order to reactivate membership, the inactive member must consult with the
facilitator before being reinstated or returning. Re-admittance will be based on availability of space.
If we have more manuscripts than time, those who arrived first will have first opportunity to read their
work aloud and be appraised. We encourage all members to show up punctually out of respect for their
fellow writers. Late arrivals are disruptive and take away from the work being read aloud. As this is a
"no-homework" group, others' work is not allowed to be taken home at any time without explicit consent
of the author.
Potential new members are requested to sit in on our meetings once or twice to decide whether we are a
good fit and to allow us to evaluate your level of experience, etc. We understand that critique groups
should benefit us not only as writers, but as people, too. This is why we adhere to a stringent admission
policy. We understand that not every critique group fits everyone's needs, and will be happy to give
you information on other groups if it's decided that we're not a good fit for you. Please do not try to mold
us into the group you're seeking.
We are affiliated with Rocky Mountain Fiction Writers and abide by their guidelines.
Basic Writing Requirements
If your writing does not meet the following basic writing requirements and guidelines, you will be
disallowed to attend meetings and/or bring work. Follow these guidelines, and you will find that our
input on your work will benefit you greatly, and you will get the most out of each session.
--Spell check and grammar check your work. Please also do a manual check to ensure that you are not
violating the basic tenets of spelling and grammar. Follow the formatting guidelines provided below.
Any work not following these guidelines will be disallowed.
--Know and understand the concept of plot, characterization, crafting a scene, passive vs. active voice,
point of view, and conflict before presenting your work to the group. If you have never read a book on
craft or technique, you are not ready to present your work or participate in the group. Look at the items
listed here for information on books we recommend. (this is perhaps the most important requirement
and we monitor this very closely)
--Be prepared to give a verbal synopsis of your story. This means that you should have a brief
paragraph ready should you be asked to give one. This indicates your mental grasp of the story you're
writing. Not only is it good practice to be able to synopsize your story, it helps you to condense the
basic plot into an easily graspable format, and shows us that you've given the story some serious
thought and aren't just wasting everyone's time.
--We welcome newcomers who are serious about publishing their writing, who are actively working on
a writing project, and who are working diligently toward realizing their writing goals. While we do
encourage you to sit in on a few meetings before making a decision to join, please understand that there
is a process involved before bringing work to the group at large or attending on a regular basis.
