Mission Statement
Our mission is to help each other get published by improving our writing...and
as writers, we recognize that there's always room for improvement. We
accomplish this by presenting our work to others, participating in workshops
on our varied areas of expertise, by keeping current on the latest writing
techniques, by reading and appraising each other's work, and by encouraging
each other to submit finished works for publication. We strive to be the best
writers we can be by reading all the latest books on craft and technique. We
understand that writing is like playing a musical instrument: you can't rise to
the top if you don't practice. And being great writers is only one of our
destinations.
We strive for various individual writing goals. Some of us have won awards
for writing, while others are still aiming to complete their first novel. In all,
we're at varying levels of personal achievement, and therefore expect patience,
respect, and courtesy from all participants.
We are open to participants who are experienced writers with a passion to be
published. However, we are strongly biased toward mainstream and literary
fiction, mystery/thrillers/suspense, fantasy, magic realism, young adult, and
horror.
Please consider that if you're looking for a non-fiction, screenwriting, or
romance group, we are probably not the right fit for you. We do not consider
hard science fiction, children's fiction, nor junior fiction.
We are a working writers' group, and our main premise is that writers write. If
you join us, be prepared to read what you are working on, to accept honest
appraisal, and also to give it. We'll help you achieve your goal of getting your
stories into print---your goal is one we share.
Participation and
Meeting Information
Meetings are held on alternating Sundays, beginning at 12:30p.m. unless
otherwise indicated. Members must provide their own refreshments. Our
meeting location has beverages and other things to purchase if you so
desire.
We are a verbal appraisal/no homework group, which means that all
information will be given verbally at the end of reading each individual
piece aloud. Please make notes as others give you information. Refrain
from "defending" your work. If you are asked for a clarification, you may
then explain your intent. If you require clarification of another's
suggestions or comments, please ask.
No writer's work may be taken home by anyone without that author's
explicit consent.
For the time being, there are no membership dues other than what Rocky
Mountain Fiction Writers charges for their annual fee.
All ideas and work presented within the group are considered confidential
and private. Plagiarism and other forms of piracy will not be tolerated and
will be dealt with swiftly, usually with Nerf bats, dog slobber, and feather
pillows. You've been warned.

Benefits of Participation
The biggest benefit is obviously the privilege of attending meetings. At
meetings, your work is heard and appraised on the basis of its
marketability. You will get marketing information and occasional updates
on markets and conferences, meet folks who can help you make
professional connections, and have a lot of fun.
Participation Guidelines
Attending meetings is a privilege and not a right. Participation can be
revoked---for failure to follow appraisal rules, for failure to follow protocol
in being appraised, for ignoring the rules in general, or by a general vote of
the other participants if the need arises. In other words, we stringently
adhere to the suggestion "play nice with others." Antagonistic or
inappropriate behavior will not be tolerated at any time. Regular
attendance is required, even if your work is not being read that session.
Participants occasionally travel in packs. If you're going to a conference
and other members are going, you can save some money by rooming
together.
