We meet bi-weekly on Sunday in the artist community of Lafayette, Colorado, from 12 - 4 p.m. Our

through auditions only, as we work within limited space and cannot provide room for every
doesn't, we will not reconsider our final decision. We offer fair and professional insight into what we
deem unacceptable, but are not a private editing service (though a number of our writing family are
professional editors in life).

Writers on the Verge is an alliance of like-minded writers interested in personal success through
writing. We offer creative guidance, constructive and positive criticism, moral and emotional support,
and community through our bi-weekly meetings. We consist of a varied level of writers...but we
come together with a common goal: publication. We firmly believe in the writing and publishing
industry, eschewing the false promises of "self-publishing" and other ways to shortcut our careers.
We invest wholeheartedly in the creative process, with patience, a strong sense of self-worth, and
perseverance.
Our distinctive name comes from the Spanish film by Pedro Almodovar, Woman on the Verge of a
Nervous Breakdown. It connotes that we're always 'on the verge' of self-discovery, inner wisdom,
personal success...and yes, sometimes even our own nervous breakdowns. Writing will do that to
you.

Christian M. Lyons - Executive Director
The mercurial nature of Christian's personality keeps him happily busy with numerous writing
projects. He is a multi-award winning writer in creative non-fiction (Digging Holes In A Lake),
novel-length fiction (Throwing Rocks At God, The Vast, Plummet), screenplays (Knock On Wood, The
Proposal - both with Karen Albright Lin), short fiction (Andante, Andante; Still Life With Epiphany;
Where To Stand In A War, Cold), and poetry (Time and Tide, chapbook 1984).
In his "spare time," Christian is a freelance fiction editor, professional creativity coach, writing mentor,
dog whisperer, and armchair anarchist.
His work has appeared in Boulder Dogs Magazine, New York Magazine, Highlights for Children, The
Bark Magazine, Delicious Living, On The Edge, RockTalk Magazine, Blue Mountain Arts, and Babel
Magazine. He recently completed two supernatural thrillers (The Vast, The Magician's Son), a number
of short stories, and is trying to figure out the effects of sleep deprivation on a writer's brain. Thus far
the results are inconclusive. The hallucinations are quite interesting, however.
He works in the following genres: general fiction, speculative fiction (horror, fantasy, supernatural),
literary fiction, and screenplay.
Christian is a member of Pikes Peak Writers, Rocky Mountain Fiction Writers, Northern Colorado
Writer's Workshop, and an affiliate of the Horror Writers Association.
His first published short story, "Old Habits", appeared in an anthology, Ship's Log: Writings at Sea.
Currently, under the wise supervision of his Shetland Sheepdog, Piper, Ken is working on the first
novel in a fantasy trilogy, as well as a two other projects, a high adventure thriller and a legal drama
mix of Grisham and Jackie Collins with a gay sensibility.
Shullamuth "Shelly" Smith: Shullamuth “Shelly” Smith has written a number of short stories, a
few professional journal articles, and is currently revising two novels: Bee Candy, a not so classic ghost
story, and Vaticination, a sci-fi mushroom tale with a horror twist. Shullamuth is a fellow with the Denver
Writing Project, and a member of Rocky Mountain Fiction Writers.
Wade Daniels: A third grade creative writing assignment was the quintessential rock that altered the
stream of Wade's life. Praised by his teacher, he's been writing ever since, the gears ever turning in the back
of his mind. Wade tends toward genres that involve the supernatural, but will write any story he feels
drawn toward. His current project is a fantasy epic with moderate science fiction elements. The back burner
is home to: creative non-fiction, comedic fiction, supernatural modern fiction, pulp noir, and science fiction.
To supplement his non-income as an unpublished writer, Wade works at Mojo's coffee shop, which is
conveniently close to where the group meets. He also attends Metro State in Denver, working on a degree in
psychology, and he knows all the hidden neuroses of all the other writers. Wade hates it when people clap
or talk at the movie theater, when coffee has grounds in it, and when he's forced to wake up before noon.
Wade likes dark beers, old Nintendo games, and lists of three. Some of his favorite authors include Sherman
Alexie, Anne LaMott, Nick Hornby, Margaret Weis, Tracy Hickman, Robert Heinlein, Neil Gaiman, Terry
Pratchett, and George R. R. Martin.
Nate Newlon: A rare sight outside of his dark, dank lair, Nate can usually be found matriculating at
the Metropolitan State College of Denver. He studies English there, and his works can be found on his
mother's refrigerator. Nate tends to work in urban settings while attempting to maintain fantasy elements,
and greatly loves mythology, modern and otherwise. His current project is one part love story, two parts
urban fairy tale, and four parts explosion and angst, but don't quote him on those proportions. In his spare
time he pursues classic nerdery and often dreams of picking up the accordion in order to properly kill off his
social prospects.
Maureen Marty: Maureen is currently writing her first historical fiction novel, A Fair Cry to War, set
during the Civil War. It chronicles the life of an Irish immigrant woman working on a Southern plantation
who is forced to choose between the slaves she has grown to love and her husband, a man eager to leave the
South far behind him. Maureen is a member of the Rocky Mountain Fiction Writers and the Romance
Writers of America.
